Rest

I was skimming through an interview with Rob Bell, founding pastor of the Mars Hill Bible Church. About halfway through the interview, he asks, “if you are busy, fried and a wreck, who wants your gospel?”

He used three words that describe my current condition perfectly.

Busy

Fried

Wreck

Last week, in a meeting, I was asked to share about my summer. My response was simple – I wanted a do-over.

In my case, a lack of rest combined with increasing responsibility has led to a mounting grumpiness.

This in turn has lead to ineffectiveness as a husband, father and national director.

This is a problem.

If following Jesus leads to grumpiness, who in their right mind would want to follow Jesus?

I run a program that, at least in theory, is committed to the biblical idea of sabbath.

Even God took a break after creation!

Much like an alcoholic, I need to admit that I am powerless over my need to be busy – busyness has led to an unmanageable life.

It was Jesus who declared, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

I am not sure how much is left to say. Busyness without rest is not a good thing.
